For the Glasgow to Ardrossan route, which is a regional ScotRail service, booking a specific seat is generally not possible. You purchase a ticket for travel on the service, which allows you to sit in any available unreserved seat. The Scotland National Entitlement Card (NEC) is partially accepted on ScotRail services, including the Glasgow to Ardrossan route. Visually impaired or blind cardholders with the 'eye + 1' symbol are entitled to free rail travel in standard class within Scotland with no time restrictions. From April 1, 2025, companions of Blind Persons with the 'eye + 1' symbol may also travel free on ScotRail. Other disabled people and those aged 60 and over who hold an NEC are generally entitled to a concessionary fare, which in the Strathclyde area (including Glasgow, Renfrewshire, and North Ayrshire) is a 33.3% discount on selected ticket types, with a minimum fare of \u00a31.00 single and \u00a31.50 return, and fares capped at \u00a32.50 single and \u00a34.00 return between designated rural zones. Young Scot NEC holders (aged 16-18) can receive 1\/3 off most rail fares, with a minimum fare of \u00a312 for travel before 10 am Monday-Friday (exceptions apply). Concessionary fares must be purchased at a ScotRail booking office before boarding, or on the train if boarding at an unstaffed station or when the booking office is closed, and the NEC must be shown when purchasing and travelling.
