Coaster 13X :Brighton to Eastbourne via the majestic Seven Sisters

If you think bus travel is just about getting from A to B, the Coaster 13X is here to change your mind. Often hailed as one of the most spectacular bus routes in the UK, this isn’t just a commute—it’s a front-row seat to the drama of the English Channel.

Operated by Brighton & Hove, the 13X is the adventurous sibling of the standard coastal buses. While other routes stick to the main road, the 13X dares to climb the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain. With the wind in your hair (if you’re lucky enough to catch an open-top service in summer) and the white cliffs plunging into the sea below, it’s a journey that feels more like a cinematic experience than public transport.

What makes this route special

The “Coaster” name isn’t just a clever brand; on the 13X, it feels like a promise. The highlight of the route is the deviation from the A259, taking you up and over the rolling South Downs to places no other public transport reaches.

Unlike the regular 12 or 12X services, which bypass the most dramatic cliff edges, the 13X is the only route that drops you directly at Birling Gap and the summit of Beachy Head. It offers a unique vantage point where the green hills of the Downs abruptly meet the blue expanse of the sea. It is widely considered one of the best value sightseeing tours in the country—offering million-pound views for the price of a standard bus ticket.

A journey through the South Downs by the sea

The route begins in the vibrant city of Brighton. Departing from the station or Churchill Square, the bus sweeps past the Sea Life Centre and heads east along the Brighton seafront.

As you leave the city behind, you’ll pass through the historic village of Rottingdean and the Art Deco architecture of Saltdean. The bus then climbs up to the clifftops of Peacehaven and drops down into the working harbour town of Newhaven, offering unparalleled views of the Sussex coastline stretching back towards Brighton.

After a quick stop in Seaford, the real adventure begins. The bus enters the South Downs National Park, weaving through the Cuckmere Valley to the Seven Sisters Park Centre. From here, the 13X breaks away from the main road to tackle the steep, winding lanes leading to Birling Gap.

The climb continues to the iconic Beachy Head. At 530 feet above sea level, the views here are simply jaw-dropping. You can see the famous red-and-white lighthouse below and, on a clear day, right across to the Isle of Wight.

Finally, the bus descends via the charming East Dean and the historic Old Town before arriving in the elegant resort town of Eastbourne.

When does the route run?

It is important to check the timetable before you travel, as the 13X schedule changes with the seasons:

  • Summer Season (typically June to September): The service usually runs daily, making it easy to plan a spontaneous trip to the beach or cliffs on a sunny weekday.
  • Winter Season (October to May): The 13X typically operates on Sundays and Public Holidays only. During the week in winter, you can still catch the Coaster 12, 12A, or 12X, but be aware these routes stick to the main road and do not go up to Beachy Head or Birling Gap (though you can walk there from the Seven Sisters stop).

Service frequency and practicalities

  • Frequency: In the height of summer, buses can run as frequently as every 30 minutes. In the winter on Sundays, it is generally an hourly service.
  • Duration: The full journey from Brighton to Eastbourne takes approximately 60 to 75 minutes, depending on traffic.
  • Vehicle Type: Modern double-decker buses are standard. In the summer months, Brighton & Hove occasionally operates open-top buses on this route, turning the commute into a full convertible experience.

Value for money

The Coaster 13X represents exceptional value. As of 2025, the national single bus fare cap in England is £3.00. This means you can travel the entire length of the spectacular coast for the price of a coffee.

For families or those planning to hop on and off, a Discovery Ticket is often the best choice. This ticket allows unlimited travel on most bus operators across East Sussex, West Sussex, and beyond for the whole day.

Planning your day out

  1. Start Early: Grab a window seat on the top deck (right-hand side if heading to Eastbourne) for the best ocean views.
  2. The Cliff Walk: Get off at Seven Sisters, walk over the cliffs to Birling Gap for a coffee, and then catch the next 13X onward to Eastbourne. This breaks up the journey and lets you stretch your legs on the famous South Downs Way.
  3. Lunch with a View: East Dean is a perfect lunch stop, featuring a quintessentially English village green and the historic Tiger Inn pub.
  4. Sunset Return: If you time it right, the return journey to Brighton offers spectacular sunsets over the sea—a perfect end to a coastal day out.

Whether you are a hiker, a photographer, or just someone who loves a good view, the Coaster 13X is more than just a bus route; it’s an essential part of the Sussex experience.
