Stagecoach's 63 :Chesterfield to Matlock

Route 63 is more than just a bus journey; it is a delightful meander through the changing landscapes of Derbyshire. Connecting the historic market town of Chesterfield with the picturesque resort town of Matlock, this service offers a perfect snapshot of the county’s character. From the famous Crooked Spire to the rolling hills of the Amber Valley and the chocolate-box beauty of Ashover, Route 63 is an essential experience for locals and visitors alike.

Previously synonymous with the local operator Hulley’s of Baslow, the route is now operated by Stagecoach Yorkshire, ensuring this vital and scenic link continues to serve the community and sightseers year-round.

What makes this route special

The true magic of Route 63 lies in its variety. In just over an hour, you transition from the bustling urban streets of Chesterfield, through fascinating industrial heritage sites, and out into the tranquil, emerald-green countryside of the Derbyshire Dales.

It is the definitive “slow travel” experience. Unlike the faster X17 which races along the main A-road, the 63 takes the scenic road less travelled. It weaves through villages that feel untouched by time, climbs hills that offer sweeping panoramas, and drops you right in the heart of walking country. For those seeking the “Best Kept Village” charm of Ashover or the rugged views from The Fabrick, this bus is your gateway.

A journey through the heart of Derbyshire

Chesterfield to Clay Cross

Your journey begins in Chesterfield, home to the world-famous Church of St Mary and All Saints with its crooked spire. As the bus heads south, you pass through the leafy suburbs of Birdholme and Wingerworth. Keep an eye out for the expansive avenues of Wingerworth, a village that blends modern living with easy access to nature.

Passing through Tupton and North Wingfield, you arrive in Clay Cross. Once a coal mining and industrial powerhouse, Clay Cross offers a glimpse into the region’s gritty past, now revitalised with a friendly community spirit.

The Scenic Turn: Ashover and the Amber Valley

Leaving the town behind, the route transforms. You wind your way through Littlemoor, Woolley Moor, and Fallgate, where the landscape opens up into rolling fields and dry-stone walls.

The highlight of the journey is undoubtedly Ashover. Often cited as one of the prettiest villages in England, Ashover is a visual treat with its honey-coloured stone cottages and historic church. The bus stops right near the heart of the village, making it the perfect base for a countryside ramble. Just above the village sits “The Fabrick” (Ashover Rock), a massivegritstone boulder offering commanding views over the valley—a must-see for photographers.

The Climb to Matlock

From Ashover, the bus climbs towards Kelstedge and Matlock Moor, offering elevated views of the dales before descending into Matlock. You finish your journey in this Victorian spa town, famous for its antique shops, the breathless heights of the cable cars, and the relaxing Hall Leys Park.

When does the route run?

Route 63 operates Monday to Saturday. It is a daytime service designed to connect communities and leisure travellers.

  • No Sunday Service: Please note that the route does not currently run on Sundays or Bank Holidays.
  • Frequency: The bus runs approximately every two hours during the day.

Because of the two-hour frequency, a little planning goes a long way. It gives you ample time to hop off, explore a village like Ashover for a couple of hours, and catch the next bus onward.

Tickets and value for money

Travelling on Route 63 is exceptionally good value, especially given the distance covered.

  • £3 Fare Cap: As of December 2025, the single fare cap is set at £3. This means no matter how far you travel on the route—even the full length from Chesterfield to Matlock—you will never pay more than £3 for a single ticket.
  • Derbyshire Wayfarer: If you plan to make multiple journeys or combine the 63 with other buses (and trains) across the county, the Derbyshire Wayfarer ticket is your best bet. It offers unlimited travel throughout Derbyshire for a flat daily rate.
  • Concessions: English National Concessionary Travel passes (older person’s bus pass) are valid on this service after 09:30 on weekdays and all day on Saturdays.

Top tips for the journey

  • Sit on the right: When travelling from Chesterfield towards Matlock, try to secure a seat on the right-hand side of the bus. As you climb out of Ashover towards Kelstedge, you’ll be treated to sweeping views down into the Amber Valley.
  • Walking boots ready: If you stop at Ashover, the walk up to Ashover Rock is relatively short but steep. The reward is a 360-degree view that stretches for miles.
  • Combine with the train: Both Chesterfield and Matlock have railway stations. You can easily do a “loop” day trip: take the train to Chesterfield, catch the 63 to Matlock, and then take the train back from Matlock (via the Derwent Valley Line) or vice versa.
