No advanced booking: just turn up and go!

Booking a seat on the TfL 242 bus route is not possible. You simply turn up at any stop along the route, board the bus and touch in with a contactless payment card, mobile device, or Oyster card. London buses are cashless, so cash is not accepted. You only need to touch in at the start of your journey.

Concessions & free bus passes

Concessionary passes are accepted on TfL 242.

Accepted concessionary bus passes: London Freedom pass.

The London Freedom Pass (both Older Person's and Disabled Person's) and English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) passes are accepted on TfL bus route 242. Disabled Person's Freedom Passes and Disabled Person's ENCTS passes are valid for free travel at all times. Older Person's Freedom Passes and Older Person's ENCTS passes are valid for free travel on weekdays between 09:00 and 04:30 the next day, and anytime on weekends and bank holidays. They are not valid between 04:30 and 09:00 on weekdays. Holders of ENCTS passes issued outside London should show their pass to the driver, as the Electronic Ticket Machine may not read them.
