The daffodils are out, the lambs are out, the bare arms are out… It must be spring! That means it’s …
The Borrowdale Bus 78 provides one of England’s most spectacular bus journeys, connecting the bustling market town of Keswick with the dramatic head of Borrowdale Valley.
This iconic open-top double-decker service winds through some of the Lake District’s most gorgeous scenery, following the shores of Derwentwater before climbing into the heart of one of Cumbria’s most celebrated valleys.
Operating hourly throughout the year and half-hourly during spring and summer months, the route serves as both a practical transport link and a sightseeing adventure.
The open-top buses allow passengers to fully immerse themselves in the mountain air and panoramic views that make this journey truly unforgettable.
The journey begins with stunning views across Derwentwater, often called the “Queen of the Lakes,” with its mirror-like surface reflecting the surrounding fells. As the bus travels south, passengers witness the dramatic transition from lake to valley, with towering peaks rising on either side.
The route showcases classic Lake District scenery including ancient oak woodlands, traditional Lakeland stone cottages, and the famous Bowder Stone – a massive 2,000-ton boulder balanced precariously on a rocky outcrop. The valley walls close in dramatically as the bus approaches Seatoller, creating an almost Alpine atmosphere with cascading waterfalls and scree slopes.
Seasonal variations add extra magic to the journey. Spring brings vibrant bluebells carpeting the woodland floors, while autumn transforms the valley into a tapestry of gold and copper. Winter journeys reveal snow-capped peaks and frost-covered trees, creating a wonderland atmosphere even from the comfort of the heated lower deck.
Keswick serves as the perfect starting point, offering excellent shopping, dining, and accommodation options. The town’s position at the head of Derwentwater makes it an ideal base for exploring the northern Lake District.
Derwentwater provides opportunities for lake cruises, walking the shoreline path, or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere at various landing stages. The lake’s islands and surrounding peaks create picture-perfect scenes throughout the year.
Grange nestles in a spectacular setting where Borrowdale opens out toward the lake. This tiny village offers access to excellent walking routes and serves as a gateway to the quieter parts of the valley.
Borrowdale encompasses some of the Lake District’s most dramatic scenery, with towering peaks, ancient woodlands, and traditional farming communities. The valley offers countless walking opportunities, from gentle riverside strolls to challenging mountain ascents.
Seatoller marks the head of the valley and serves as the starting point for walks into the high fells, including routes to Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, and the dramatic Honister Pass.
The bus route connects to exceptional walking opportunities for all abilities. Short walks include the gentle riverside path from Grange to Rosthwaite, while more challenging routes lead to mountain tarns and spectacular viewpoints.
The famous Borrowdale circular walk can be completed using the bus service, allowing walkers to explore different sections of the valley.
Photography enthusiasts will find endless opportunities, from intimate woodland scenes to grand mountain vistas. The open-top experience provides unobstructed views perfect for capturing the Lake District’s ever-changing moods and seasonal beauty.
Traditional Lakeland hospitality awaits at village pubs and tea rooms along the route, many serving locally sourced food and Cumbrian ales. Farm shops offer the chance to purchase local produce, while craft shops showcase traditional Lake District arts and crafts.
